Genetics sheds light on mental illnesses

by bipolarr on Nov.04, 2008, under Bipolar Articles

By Carey Goldberg Globe Staff / October 14, 2008

For decades, scientists seeking genes involved in mental illness reaped mainly frustration. But in recent months, painstaking analysis of the DNA of thousands of patients has yielded important, and surprising, insights into the roots of schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and autism.

Though the findings do not translate into better ways to diagnose or treat patients, researchers say that for the first time they are making real progress.

The Bipolar Puzzle

by bipolarr on Nov.04, 2008, under Bipolar Articles

James, then 10, had been given a diagnosis of bipolar disorder two years earlier. He was attending a therapeutic day school in another borough and riding more than an hour each way on a school bus, so he came home after Claire. Until James’s arrival that April afternoon, Claire was showing me sketches she had drawn of her Uglydolls and chatting about the Web site JibJab, where she likes to watch goofy videos. At the sound of James’s footsteps outside her bedroom door, she flattened herself behind the barricade. There was a sharp knock. After a few seconds, James’s angry, wounded voice barked, “Forget it,” and the steps retreated.

by bipolarr on Nov.04, 2008, under Bipolar Articles

Jane Cadzow, Sydney

Bipolar Disorder: Manic Mouse Made With One Gene Missing

by bipolarr on Nov.04, 2008, under Bipolar Articles

ScienceDaily (Mar. 13, 2008) — Bipolar Disorder (BPD or manic-depressive illness) is one of the most serious of all mental disorders, affecting millions of individuals worldwide. Affected individuals alternate between states of deep depression and mania. While depression is characterized by persistent and long-term sadness or despair, mania is a mental state characterized by great excitement, flight of ideas, a decreased need for sleep, and, sometimes, uncontrollable behavior, hallucinations, or delusions. BPD likely arises from the complex interaction of multiple genes and environmental factors. Unlike some brain diseases, no single gene has been implicated in BPD.

How a Bipolar Patient Learned to Manage Mania

by bipolarr on Nov.04, 2008, under Bipolar Articles

Like many people with bipolar disorder, Laurel Lemke, 54, of Lakewood, Wash., cycled in and out of hospitals and tried various treatments before being diagnosed and treated with her disorder. Though she will likely never be “cured,” her mental illness no longer is central to her life. Here is how she copes today

If someone had told me when I was in my teens that one day I’d be a spokesperson for a mental health group, I wouldn’t have believed them. Chances are, I wouldn’t have understood them either. When I was 18, I was drowsy on antipsychotics and hospitalized for my first manic attack. But a lot has changed since then, and over the last 36 years I’ve learned how to manage my health. And, as a member of NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness), I help other people understand mental illness for themselves and their loved ones.
